In 1997/98, IUT in cooperation with BOSCH Sicherheitssysteme a complex monitoring system was installed in the German Parliament building (Reichstag) in Berlin. By means of this system ambient air within the building is permanently monitored for the existence of Chemical Warfare Agents (CWA’s) and Toxic Industrial Chemicals (TIC’s). This system, based on IMS technology, is integrated in a more general building protection system and therefore a more holistic alarm handling was realized. That includes all entire possibilities which a classical building protection system can offer. By this extension of the classical concept with components of monitoring of possible Terrorist Attacks new ground was broken. The monitoring system is an integrated active system. Ambient air in the building is monitored permanently (24/7/365). As soon as Chemical Warfare Agents are detected, air conditioning valves are closed immediately to prevent further circulation. At the same time the evacuation of the building is initiated by the central control system as well as other actions are taken. Based on the extremely high sensitivity of the system and its rapid detection response the threat can be recognized already at a very early stage and all additional necessary actions can be taken.
Recently, IUT has developed a new generation of IMS-devices which is able to detect explosives, narcotics and Chemical Warfare Agents within seconds. At the moment IUT is developing an IMS-device for the detection of biological Warfare Agents.
